Demotte Church of Christ

Following God one step at a time.

The bible truly is a wonderful gift from God. His words explain His love and plan for all of mankind. God wants to have a deep meaningful relationship with each and every person, but He also wants us to have that same desire. We are dedicated to the service of God and His people, and our goal is to shine His light out for the world to see. We invite you to come learn, worship, and become a part of our growing congregation.

Can we really understand the bible?

For centuries mankind has wrestled with scriptures and argued over what the exact meanings were. Don't let the actions of men dictate your spiritual destination.

"When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ".

When the Apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians in chapter 3 and verse 4, he told them they could and should understand what was written.

So why do people not agree then? Peter gives us this in-site in 2 Peter 3:16:

"There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures".

Still some people do not understand or agree for other reasons. For instance:

"For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions". (2 Tim. 4:3)

And a last example is simply that some people don't want to teach the truth but will tell lies so they may make money from God's words.

"For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach". (Titus 1:10-11).

So we have seen many reasons as to why men do not agree on the bible's texts, but rest assured, God tells us that we can know His will.

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth". (2 Tim. 2:15)

Is the Sinners Prayer a biblical practice?

Many have heard of a sinners prayer and may even have utilized one. The question arises as to whether this is a God ordained practice or an implementation of man.
If one looks at the bible, the inspired word of God, there is not one account given where a single soul was saved by reciting a sinners prayer. Don't take our word for it, look for yourselves.
Many will use passages such as Romans 10:13 to justify this routine. In the passage it is stated that if one calls on the name of the Lord they will be saved. This is entirely true. The proper exegesis is to understand what it means to "call" and not to just fill it in with ones own ideas or practices.
Sadly today many go to the bible and use it as a drunkard uses a light pole. Instead of using it for illumination they use it for support.
Matthew 15:8-9 tells us that some people will honor God with their words but their hearts are far from Him because they follow the teachings of man and not God. We must be careful in our usage of scripture for our eternal destination depends on it.
Getting back to "calling on the name of the Lord", let us examine the bible to understand more completely.
Matthew 7:21 stated that not everyone who says Lord Lord shall be saved. Just from this comparison one can see that "calling" is more than a verbal response.
Zephehiah 3:9 adds a piece of the puzzle in explaining that part of this calling involves serving God.
Think of it this way. If you call on a doctor, you go and get his appraisal and advice, and you either follow his words or deny them. That is what "calling" means.
In the New Testament in Acts 2:21 the people where going to "call" on God for salvation. Verse 37 they were convicted and asked how to do this. Peter said, verse 38, repent and be baptized.
Don't let a man made practice keep your soul from salvation. Study to show yourselves approved by God (2 Tim. 2:15).
Acts 22:16, "And now why do you wait? arise and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on his name."

unto God (Eph. 5:19).
We pray (James 5:13).
We study and are taught from
God's word (2 Tim. 2:15).
On the first day of the week we partake of the Lord's Supper (Acts 20:7) and also have a collection (1 Cor. 16:2).
It is our aim to honor and glorify God in all
that we do.
